Joint-Mapping Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing With Subcarrier Number Modulation

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) has been recently proposed to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of traditional OFDM system. In this paper, we propose a joint-mapping OFDM-SNM (JM-OFDM-SNM) scheme transmit signal vector constant length information bits by jointly considering activation patterns and constellation symbols. A low-complexity detection based on log-likelihood ratio criterion is relieve high computational complexity maximum-likelihood at cost negligible performance loss. Upper-bounded bit error rate (BER) lower-bounded achievable are both derived in closed-form evaluate JM-OFDM-SNM. To suit different application scenarios, further two enhanced schemes, named adaptive JM-OFDM-SNM (AJM-OFDM-SNM) JM-OFDM in-phase/quadrature SNM (JM-OFDM-IQ-SNM), where former adjusts orders for numbers active subcarriers, latter extends indexing in-phase quadrature domains. Simulation results corroborate tightness BER expression signal-to-noise region show that (A)JM-OFDM-SNM improves OFDM-SNM, while AJM-OFDM-SNM JM-OFDM-IQ-SNM schemes perform better than same SE.
